Children can also be affected by psychological disorders. Taking care of mental health in childhood is just as important as taking care of it in other age groups. Untreated psychological conditions can impact a child's cognitive development, causing other problems as they grow.
How psychological disorders affect children's mental health Disorders in children's mental health are characterized, in general, as delays or interruptions in their process of developing thoughts, behaviors and social skills. As they are still in the process of development, they cannot fully control their cognitive functions and manage their emotions. Thus, their experience with symptoms of psychological disorders is quite different from that of adults. Children show intense emotional lack of control and rebellious and impulsive behaviors at home, at school and in social situations. Symptoms also change with age. When not treated properly, they intensify and jeopardize the enjoyment of adolescence and adulthood.
As they still cannot interpret their feelings very well, they find it difficult to express themselves. Therefore, parents are more involved in the diagnosis and psychological treatment of children. Adults are more resilient, although they also have different reactions to symptoms of psychological pathologies. Still, adults have the ability to notice differences in their behavior and seek psychological treatment more easily. Stigma around the need to take medication or go to therapy is a deterrent in both cases. Especially in childhood, parents can attribute the state of their children's mental health to their failure, refusing to seek professional help.
