WONDER WOMAN SYNDROME

WHEN TIREDNESS TURNS INTO DISEASE

The exhaustion caused by the various household chores combined with working outside can result in Wonder Woman Syndrome.

Taking care of the kids, the house, the food and still working outside can be very exhausting. And most of the time, all these roles are associated with women. After all, society charges this type of female behavior due to the structure and standards that come from centuries.

However, one very important detail is often overlooked: exhaustion. So much daily battle leads not only to tiredness, but often to mental exhaustion — also known as psychological or mental exhaustion — and may even result in a disease: Wonder Woman Syndrome, which has, by definition, the woman who she doesn't have many choices and has to "embrace" several tasks in her day to day to handle the responsibilities implied to her. There are many activities that, added up, overload and trigger emotional triggers.

"We cannot fail to say that the modern woman fought for her freedom and, with that, she feels that she needs to be the best mother, the powerful one in the professional field, the exemplary wife, an excellent housewife and, in addition to all that, have a standard of beauty required by society," explains psychologist Regina Alonso.

Mental and physical symptoms

There are numerous symptoms that can characterize mental exhaustion. The main ones are: discouragement, excessive fatigue, drowsiness, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, constant mood swings, irritability, depression, weight loss or gain, anguish and sadness.

"Depression and panic syndrome are brought up in the psychotherapy sessions. The mental and psychic suffering are visible in the sessions and in this woman's day to day. Physically, in consultations, they express complaints of headaches, insomnia, body aches, weakness, allergies, excessive weight gain and weight loss", details the professional.

Treating the syndrome

The psychologist says that in the therapeutic process, several "wonder women" realize that they don't have to handle everything all the time. From this, it is possible to find balance through psychotherapy and also through breathing techniques to help calm the mind, such as meditation, for example.

About the treatment, it is important that the woman has the diagnosis of Wonder Woman Syndrome perceived through the symptoms and behaviors presented, either by a relative who felt significant changes in her lifestyle or even a health professional who noticed the alert.

Afterwards, it is necessary to seek help from a qualified professional such as a psychologist, who will help to see different paths, showing how to deal with this problem and deconstruct limiting beliefs on how to be a woman. It is through the therapeutic process that she will be able to reframe her life story and move forward with physical and emotional quality of life.
